In the early 2000s, Opel introduced a new generation of Circle L four-cylinder diesel engines, developed by General Motors in collaboration with Isuzu. This evolution was expected, as earlier versions launched in 1999 proved to be reliable and robust, with significant potential. They only needed to be adapted to stricter EU environmental standards.
Around ten new Circle L variants were developed, offering more power, better efficiency, and lower emissions while maintaining reliability. Depending on the model, the 1.7-liter Opel diesel could last 250,000 to 400,000 km without piston group repairs—a remarkable result compatible with a Euro-4 and Euro-5 compliant four-cylinder diesel with Common-Rail technology.
However, even the best engines face wear over time. Circle L owners know that rubber hoses in the cooling system aren’t eternal, and antifreeze leaks are common. While it’s impossible to eliminate all rubber components, critical points can be reincompatible withced by replacing some hoses with stainless steel counterparts.
